Coast to Coast AM is a North American late-night radio talk show that deals with a variety of topics, but most frequently ones that relate to either the paranormal or conspiracy theories. As of 2006, the show attracts an estimated 4.5 million listeners every night.
Ian Punnett was joined by Professor of History, Scott Poole,
for a discussion of how the monster, in all its various forms, has been
a staple of American culture since the earliest settlers of the
country. "Academics ought to take monsters seriously," Poole said,
explaining that, regardless of the veracity of their existence, the
belief in these entities "has real world effects in the material
structures of society." To that end, he was reticent to provide "an
abstract definition of a monster" because their identity and meaning
have changed over time. "Monsters are products of the context that they
come out of," he said, noting that, during different eras, monsters
could be sea serpents, serial killers, or "the thing with a thousand
eyes."
Tracing this concept back to the very beginnings of America, Poole
observed that the early Puritan settlers arrived in the New World
actually expecting monsters, which is what informed their perception of
the Native Americans. He cited a long standing written history in Europe
which suggested "monstrous races that were out beyond where the maps
ended." As such, Poole said, when the settlers arrived in the New World,
their intention was not to convert the Native Americans, but to
eliminate the "monsters" which they so greatly feared. Beyond the Native
Americans, he said, early settlers believed they were surrounded by
Satanic forces and, thus, were troubled by the concept of witches as
monsters and even regarded black bears as "diabolical creatures."
Looking at monsters in modern times, Poole pointed to the emergence of
zombies in pop culture as a glimpse into the psyche of the contemporary
populace. He observed that the popularity of zombies coincides with
America becoming greatly fearful of viral outbreaks as well as obsessed
with body image. He likened the zombie to "the ultimate nightmare of
American culture's fascination with bodily fulfillment," since it is a
decaying version of the human form that is "hungry all the time."
Additionally, he surmised that zombies represent "our relationship with
the dead" as well as people who are disconnected from society. Over the
course of the evening, Poole also discussed the societal implications of
other "monsters" like Bigfoot, werewolves, and the Jersey Devil.
The Phoenix Flash
In the first hour, astronomer Dr. Sky and researcher Lynne Kitei discussed the mysterious flash
which appeared in the Phoenix sky during a TV news traffic report. Dr.
Sky said that there appears to be no meteorological reason for the event
and also dismissed the idea that it could have been caused by methane
gas being released from Earth, despite similar reports which happened
prior to the Japanese earthquake last year. He also expressed skepticism
that it was UFO related, since the flash was a "ground up event" and
did not display the characteristics of classic UFO reports. Kitei
revealed that she actually appeared on this same FOX station over the
weekend and that she was told that both the local utility companies and
the nearby Air Force base had no explanation for the flash.

Mystery Flash over Phoenix
A seemingly innocuous newscast in Phoenix on Thursday morning has
yielded a baffling enigma as, over the shoulder of the reporter, a
bright flash of light appeared in the sky. Meteorologists and electric
companies have dismissed prosaic explanations for the event, which is
drawing comparisons to the famed Phoenix Lights incident which occurred
in the same skies nearly 15 years ago. More on the story, including
video of the incident, at the Huffington Post.
During the first half of the program, Ian Punnett welcomed author Kent Hartman
welcomed author Kent Hartman for a discussion on 'The Wrecking Crew,' a
group of the largely unknown and uncredited studio musicians who played
on countless classic rock songs. This coterie of artists, he explained,
consisted of about two dozen LA-based musicians that were highly
skilled at playing rock music in the 1960's. This proficiency led to
record labels having them play in the recording studio rather than
actual members of many well known rock bands. Since the band members
provided the vocals and went on tour performing the songs, Hartman said,
the record companies "didn't feel like they were totally lying to you."
Hartman detailed a number of instances where classic songs featured the
Wrecking Crew's work instead of the actual bands which were credited
with having played the music, including the Beach Boys' "Good
Vibrations" as well as the Grass Roots' "Midnight Confession". He also
shared the story of how producers actually refused to allow the Byrds to
record "Mr. Tambourine Man," since they were considered "novices and
incapable of playing at studio quality." As such, the album version of
the song consists of the Wrecking Crew's work alongside Roger McGuinn,
the only band member allowed to participate. Hartman noted that the
recording of the song only took a handful of takes. Conversely, when the
Byrds insisted on playing their own instruments for their follow-up
song, "Turn, Turn, Turn," it required over 70 takes and days worth of
studio time to complete.

During Open Lines, Sid in Abilene, Texas shared the story of two strange
encounters from his youth. He recalled seeing a kangaroo in a pasture
in front of his house and, later, a six foot tall rabbit in the same
area. The kangaroo, he said, was hopping up and down and "kinda waving
his front arms at me." Sid expressed mysticism over the nature of these
odd events. Other callers included Peter in Minnesota, who recounted his
own "pretty scary" experience hearing the "mysterious sounds"
phenomenon and Leonse in Louisiana, who was puzzled by how the Piri Reis map
could feature a detailed depiction of Antarctica's coastline.
Meanwhile, Manuel in Stockton called in to note that, 70 years ago to
the night, the Battle of LA was unfolding over the skies of Los Angeles.
O'Reilly & JFK
In the first half hour, author Russ Baker
reacted to Bill O'Reilly's impending book on John F. Kennedy which
claims to reveal "why his life was cut short." Baker traced O'Reilly's
interest in the JFK assassination back to work he did as a newscaster in
Dallas in the 1970's as well as later reports on the TV program Inside Edition.
According to a former pundit from Fox News who spoke to Baker, O'Reilly
frequently tried to do stories on the Kennedy assassination but "top
ranked people" at the network "kept stepping on the story." While it
would appear, based on his previous work, the book would lend credence
to conspiracy theories surrounding the assassination, Baker surmised
that "if Bill O'Reilly wants to keep his career at Fox, he is not going
to be revealing anything."

Man-Made 'Snow Circles'
This 'snow circle' from France may appear supernatural, but it actually
has a decidedly terrestrial origin. Artist Simon Beck creates his
intricate designs by foot, using snowshoes after mapping the designs out
with surveying tools and some of the more elaborate creations can take
up to five hours to complete. More on the story, including many more
images of Beck's creations, can be found at the Daily Mail.
During the first half of the program, Emmy-award winning journalist, Kristi Piehl,
provided an update on the Smiley Face Killers and why she is now
investigating mysterious drowning deaths. Now "happily retired" from
television journalism, Piehl explained that she now sees herself as an
advocate for the victims' families rather than a reporter on the case.
As such, she revealed that her study of police reports and work with
forensic experts has led her to the conclusion that focusing on the
graffiti found at the crime scene is not the solution to solving these
mysterious deaths. "By continuing to look for graffiti and talk about
who is doing it really is a detriment and really is holding the
investigation back," she said.
While Piehl downplayed the 'Smiley Face' aspect of these deaths, she
stressed that there is a very real phenomenon taking place where young
men are drowning under mysterious circumstances. "These drowning
mysteries, they defy logic," she said, noting that the victims are being
found fully clothed with their shoes and wallets. While Piehl conceded
that one such death could be attributed to a death by misadventure, the
sheer number of similar cases demands closer scrutiny. "When it happens
100 times over 10 years and it's just happening in the winter and it's
just happening in certain states," she said, "then you have to take a
second look."
-------------------------------------
In the second half, former White House correspondent, Don Fulsom,
discussed Richard Nixon's connections to organized crime as well as the
former president's demons, deceptions, paranoia, prejudices, and
hatreds. He traced Nixon's mob connections all the way back to his first
Congressional bid in 1946 which Fulsom claimed was backed by "the top
hoodlum in Los Angeles, Mickey Cohen." This underworld relationship
culminated, Fulsom said, when Nixon accepted $300,000 from the
Teamster's Union and, subsequently, granted clemency to Jimmy Hoffa,
which released the union leader from prison five years early. "He
certainly did a lot of favors for the mob all the way through his
political career," Fulsom contended.
Fulsom also detailed how Nixon had a number of personality quirks which
ranged from bizarre to sinister. A cold distance from his family, fits
of rage where ashtrays would be throw at walls, and a lifelong penchant
for breaking and entering that preceded the infamous Watergate incident,
were just some of the traits that Fulsom ascribed to the former
president. On Nixon's apparent inability to make small talk or connect
with average people, Fulsom shared the story of how a member of the
president's motorcade was in an accident and was lying on the ground in
pain. Encouraged by his staff to talk to the injured officer, Nixon
walked over to the man and asked "how do you like the work?"
Cryptid Videos
In the first half hour, monster hunter Ken Gerhard commented on recent stories about the Iceland lake monster and woolly mammoth.
He was critical of the 'lake monster' film because the alleged creature
was moving vertically rather than horizontally, which contradicts the
"accepted model" based on numerous eyewitness reports of sea cryptids.
Regarding the woolly mammoth footage, Gerhard was suspicious because the
color of the 'trunk' did not match the rest of the creature's body. "As
much I'd love to say it is a living mammoth," he chuckled, "I feel
safer saying its inconclusive."
Kicking off his new, second Sunday of the month slot, Ian Punnett was joined by criminologist Dr. Roger Roots
for a discussion on the fully informed jury movement, the establishment
of a fair and equal court system for all participants, as well as the
erosion of Fourth Amendment protections and other rights in America. The
Founding Fathers placed a high importance on the right to trial by jury
in the Constitution, but what happens today is that judges often
falsely tell a jury that if the government reasonably proves their case,
they are required to return a conviction, when by law a jury is never
required to acquit, he pointed out.
A lot of intimidation by judges goes on, he continued, citing how in one
recent federal case, a judge repeatedly told a jury, 'you understand
that you must follow my instructions on the law and it is a violation of
your oath if you fail to follow my instructions.' But that's absolutely
deceptive, because a judge knows that no jury can ever be punished for
their verdict, Roots asserted. Another problem is that jurors are often
kept in the dark about what sentencing will be, so they aren't able to
evaluate if the punishment fits the crime, he noted. The organization FIJA works to inform potential jurors of these issues, and their legal rights.
Roots also spoke about how America has increasingly become a police
state, with citizens often subjected to aggressive policing, and
questionable searches and seizures. Now with the passage of the National
Defense Authorization Act, whereupon people can be arrested without a
charge or lawyer, "it's a brand new day of tyranny," he lamented. Part
of the problem, he noted, is that the US public has become apathetic and
doesn't vote out or remove politicians who vote in favor of such
fascistic policies.
Sasquatch Communications
First hour guest, Bigfoot researcher & holistic health consultant Kewaunee Lapseritis
told his personal story of being telepathically contacted by a
Sasquatch and an ET simultaneously, 33 years ago in Wisconsin. The
Sasquatch are an "evolved nature people" brought here millions of years
ago by the "star people," and do mining and heavy bulk work for the ETs,
he explained. According to his communications with Sasquatch & ETs
(he said he's had over 1,000 telepathic encounters since the initial
contact), within the next few years there'll be a pole flip, volcanic
eruptions, tidal waves and superquakes, and the US coastal areas are
particularly dangerous.

In the first half of the program, medical intuitive and psychiatrist Dr. Judith Orloff
talked about how dreams can provide psychological healing and valuable
insights for the future. "I look at dreams as shining lights in the
darkness... giving us information about ourselves," Orloff said. Dreams
can show a person what they're afraid of and how to be healed from it,
she explained. They can guide one toward a certain direction in life as
well, Orloff said, noting that she herself listened to dreams about
becoming a psychiatrist. Even nightmares have the power to heal, as they
can help the mind to purge inner darkness, she revealed.
Orloff encouraged listeners to develop their intuitive nature and dreams
lives as the year 2012 approaches. "We need to summon all of our
energies beyond the linear mind. The linear mind won't be enough to
handle [the challenges of the new year]," she said. People must instead
look to their hearts, intuition, and dreams to get guidance and to
conjure the necessary positive energy, Orloff added. She also spoke
about the challenges of finding a good therapist, noting the importance
of having good chemistry between patient and doctor, and seeing changes
in one's life fairly quickly. Related Link: Developing Intuition Download Package

During the last two hours of the show, hypnotherapy expert Rick Collingwood
discussed using hypnosis to help better one's life and maintain a
positive outlook. "Our thoughts create our feelings," Collingwood
stated. If people let in all of the negative stuff, it will become who
they are, he noted. According to Collingwood, there is no reason to
dwell in negativity as 90% of one's thoughts and fears never come to
fruition. Whenever negative thoughts do enter the mind, he recommended
saying, "You have no place here, go away." While it may not be possible
to change adverse circumstances, people can always change how they think
about them, he added.
This is where hypnosis comes into play. The subconscious is filled with
patterns and programs, similar to a computer, which get enhanced by
one's thoughts and feelings, Collingwood continued. As an example,
Collingwood noted that if a person is having a difficult time finding
employment, he or she may come to believe that a job will never be
found, become negative about future employment opportunities, and simply
stop looking. Hypnosis changes how one reacts to the environment by
replacing on program for another, more useful, one, he said. Several of
Collingwood's self-hypnosis programs are available on iTunes.

The father of cognitive neuroscience, Michael Gazzaniga,
joined Ian to offer a provocative argument against the common belief
that our lives are wholly determined by physical processes and we are
therefore not responsible for our actions. He explained that
neuroscience research reveals that decision making is based on a
combination of "the information that was built into us structurally" as
well as knowledge of previous experiences. He marveled that the human
brain is a "finely honed machine" that "provides us, also, with this
believe that we're in charge of running this thing."
Despite this perspective on decision making, he argued, it does not free
people from accountability and responsibility, since these are societal
factors that exist outside of the brain. "Responsibility is something
that we humans assigned to the other person," he mused, "so if you are
going to be a part of the human culture, I'm going to hold you
responsible." In light of that, Gazzaniga suggested that criminal cases
where the perpetrator is mentally disturbed, but clearly guilty, should
result in a judgement of "responsible, but insane." He also predicted
that neuroscientists may eventually be able to "fix" such mental issues,
which will create a deep cultural debate over how to mete out proper
punishment. "I don't say these are easy answers," he said, "I'm saying
they're tough questions, but that's what we should be thinking about."
Gazzaniga was also dismissive of the religious connotations surrounding
the debate over free will, which suggest that all of our actions have
been predetermined by a proverbial 'higher power.' He contended that
there were far too many variables and "there's no information system in
the world that can possibly take that into account." With that in mind,
Gazzaniga surmised that the concept of 'free will' essentially becomes
antiquated because "we're not coerced by outside forces" and one is
responsible for their own actions. Over the course of the conversation,
Gazzaniga also talked about other brain-related topics such as research
into the damaged brains of athletes and whether or not it would be
possible to transplant a brain.
The Future of Consumerism
In the first hour, Andy Hines
discussed how people's values are reshaping the consumer landscape. He
observed that there appears to be a cultural backlash against
consumerism where "people are rejecting this idea that consumption is
going to make them happy." Hines noted that this perspective actually
coincides with research which shows that, once our basic needs are met,
"adding more money does nothing for our happiness." Hines put forward
the idea that "authenticity" is one key concept which businesses would
be wise to embrace as the future unfolds. He explained that the evolving
consumer mindset expects to be treated with respect and told the truth,
rather than be misled or coddled, which will lead to a greater level of
appreciation from that customer.

Ian's Announcement
Ian announced that he would be stepping away from his weekly hosting
duties starting in January 2012 to seek treatment for tinnitus and
hearing loss. Ian will continue his Coast presence on the second Sunday of every month. John B. Wells (email) will take over hosting duties on Saturday nights.
Joining Ian Punnett, Paul A. Trout (book link), retired professor at Montana State University, will discuss the myths of devouring lions, giant bears and snapping alligators - these and other animal predators in search of human flesh are a staple of ancient mythology, along with their mythic counterparts like dragons or griffins. First hour guest, Galen Cook, has an update in the D.B. Cooper mystery.
[Full Info]
Joining Ian Punnett, Paul A. Trout (book link), retired professor at Montana State University, for a discussion on how ancient mythology about animal predators in search of human flesh has factual roots based on mankind's early history. He traced this concept back to the Pleistocene Era, when the human species was living and evolving on the African savanna. During that time, Trout said, humans lived amongst predatory creatures, like sabre toothed tigers and birds of prey, that were far more massive than their contemporary counterparts. He cited archaeological evidence which indicates that human beings were frequently eaten by these creatures, who likely saw man as easy prey, since they had yet to develop weapons to defend themselves.
Among the predatory creatures from the Pleistocene Era that Trout detailed were giant snakes that had a diameter of 18 inches and weighed 800 pounds as well as a bird of prey which weighed 50 pounds and could lift humans off the ground. Additionally, he said, there were massive dogs, weighing 200 pounds, that hunted in packs of fifty and bears that had skulls which were 3 to 4 times the size of a modern grizzly bear. Given this extreme preponderance of predatory creatures, Trout observed that our ancestors living in this environment would likely witness "stacks of bones littering the landscape" and hear the sounds of not only victims of these predatory animals but also their calls to each other while on the hunt. "It must have been very unnerving for our ancestors to live within this milieu," Trout mused, "that was nosy with death and littered with corpses, bones, and kill sites."
Trout also suggested that these living conditions resulted in a critical change in the human psyche. "We finally realized that one of the best ways of dealing with our fear of predators was to become the predator," he explained. He pointed to early humans donning animal pelts and hunting in packs as ways that they mimicked the creatures that once feasted on them. Additionally, Trout argued that mankind's role as prey laid the foundation for our religious belief system. He contended that the first gods which humans worshipped were predatory animals, which is the basis for the proverbial "fear of God." As man grew more sophisticated, he theorized, "we wanted to identify with a divine agent that was more like us" which led to the gods found in modern religions. In turn, Trout said, the idea of a "predator god" became fused with the devils of these religions.
D.B. Cooper Update
In the first hour, Galen Cook provided an update on the D.B. Cooper mystery, which marked its 40th anniversary this past week. Cook was dismissive of the recent news reports concerning titanium found of Cooper's tie, which was left behind during the heist, because such metalurgical evidence cannot conclusively determine the identity of infamous skyjacker. Conversely, he stressed that the letters allegedly sent by Cooper following his heist provide more tangible clues as to the identity and location of the legendary robber. For a detailed look at the Cooper letters, see Cook's report here. During Cook's appearance, the neice of his prime suspect, Bill Gossett, called in to the program and recalled how Gossett would routinely give large sums of money to her family and how her older brothers jokingly called him 'D.B.'
